One strike. One swing.

That’s all it took

Despite being used as the vamp’s personal pincushion, Adam found the strength to lift the sword. It sliced right through the Nightwalker’s neck like a hot knife through chilled butter. No resistance. No fight.

One second, the Nightwalker had a head. The next? Nope. It landed with a thud on the blacktop, the expensive shades clinking as they fell off the detached head.

It took a moment for the adrenaline to complete rushing through him before he realized that the fight was over. He was pretty sliced up himself, but he was alive—in a manner of speaking, that was.

Adam turned to the human who was gaping up at him. Hudson’s buddy was still sprawled on the ground, staring in slack-jawed shock.

He bent, about to extend his hand to the human to help him up. Another wave of pain slammed into him, causing Adam to grit his teeth. A quick peek below revealed that the Nightwalker’s lucky slice was more than that. In the right light, he could probably see directly inside of him, the gashes were so wide.

Just in case, he clamped his arm around his middle. Better to keep all the organs where they belonged if he could.

“You Scott?”

Scrambling to his feet, the human nodded slowly. His hand crept up the side of his neck, antsy fingers covering the holes in his throat. Scott probed at them, his mouth opening slightly as he felt their width. “He… he was going to drain me, wasn’t he? Try to turn me?”

“He was trying to kill you,” Adam said flatly.

The big man flinched. “He was rough, but I thought…”

“Yeah, well. You thought wrong. You’re lucky I was here. Heading into a back alley with a Nightwalker is fucking stupid. When they go rogue, it’s almost impossible to stop them. You got real lucky, pal.”

Scott was a damn idiot, but maybe he wasn’t so stupid after all. Instead of pointing out that he was still alone in a back alley with a Nightwalker, he just said, “Thank you… I— if there’s anything I can do to show you my gratitude.”

He tilted his head slightly, offering the side of his throat that was whole. No way Adam didn’t get his meaning.

“That’s alright. Not big on the sweets.”

“Well, then—”

Adam tightened his arm around his lower stomach, willing the flesh to close. He could hear blood pumping in his ears, so loud that he could barely make out the stammering gratitude coming from the human.

“It’s fine. Just be more careful, yeah? You can’t trust Nightwalkers.”

“But you—”

The scent of his sugary blood tickled Adam’s senses. It smelled delicious and, though he refused to give in to this thirst, he couldn’t keep his fangs back—and the human noticed.

“Unless you want to see if you’ll survive another bite, I’d get the hell out of here.”

“I just—”

Adam hissed.

Scott bolted.

Less than a minute later, the human disappeared into the hustle and bustle of the Grayson nightlife. Adam waited until the scent of his blood dissipated—until he could
